Rory McIlroy to skip Irish Open

Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will not compete in the Irish Open at the end of June. The Northern Irish golfer has opted to skip the Mount Juliet event but will play on Irish shores at the JP McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor the week after the Irish Open.

McIlroy will play four tournaments in as many weeks with the Memorial, the RBC Canadian Open, the Travelers and the US Open all taking place before the Irish Open. He will rest that week – the tournament at Mount Juliet starts on June 30th – before playing at Adare Manor. Another break will follow before the Open kicks off on July 14th.

McIlroy, who formerly hosted Ireland’s flagship tournament, simply could not find time to fit it into his schedule given its position in the calendar between two majors. “I’ll play these next four weeks and then it’s two weeks out from competitive golf I guess,” he explained. “I’ll go to Adare Manor and play JP’s Pro-Am and then just probably be around the area that week, play some links golf and then head to St Andrews maybe the weekend before to get some prep done.”

McIlroy finished in eight at last weekend’s US PGA Championship.
